Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge is unlike any other resort at Walt Disney World. The central feature isn't a pool, a spa, or proximity to a theme park — it's a working African wildlife savanna on 33 acres directly behind the resort, home to more than 30 species of African animals and birds. Giraffes, zebras, flamingos, wildebeest, and ankole cattle roam the grounds. From savanna-view rooms, you can watch them from your balcony at dawn.
The DVC component comprises two separate buildings — Jambo House and Kidani Village — and the differences between them affect which one is right for your trip.
What Makes Animal Kingdom Lodge Unique
The savanna experience is the defining feature and no description fully captures it until you're standing on a balcony at 6:30 a.m. with a giraffe walking 40 feet below you. Disney maintains the savanna as a working zoological habitat with a full animal care team. The savanna is lit at night, which means you can watch nocturnal activity after returning from the parks. Best viewing times are dawn and dusk.
Jambo House vs Kidani Village
Jambo House is the main building — the original resort that opened in 2001. The hotel rooms and DVC villas are integrated here, with the lobby, Boma, Jiko, and the main pool (Uzima Springs) all steps away. If you want proximity to the main resort amenities, Jambo House is the right choice. The tradeoff: it's older, and standard-view rooms face the pool rather than the savanna. To see wildlife from your balcony, specifically book a savanna-view category.
Kidani Village opened in 2009 as an all-DVC building with a quieter, more residential feel. Kidani has its own pool (Samawati Springs) and its own restaurant (Sanaa). The same savanna-view issue applies — standard rooms face the parking area. Kidani is a longer walk from the main amenities (5–7 minutes). For most renters, Jambo House is the better choice unless the Sanaa restaurant is a specific priority.
The Food: Boma, Jiko, and Sanaa
Boma is an all-you-can-eat buffet with African-inspired dishes. The dinner buffet includes the famous zebra domes dessert. Reserve 60 days out — it consistently books up.
Jiko is the signature upscale restaurant with an exceptional South African wine program — Disney's only restaurant with a dedicated South African wine list. One of the more impressive meals on Disney property.
Sanaa at Kidani is famous for its bread service: six to eight African breads served with nine accompaniments including chutneys, hummus, and spiced dipping sauces. One of the most talked-about individual food items at Disney World. Sanaa tables are easier to get than Boma or Jiko, and savanna views from the restaurant mean you may watch animals while eating.
Room Types and Point Costs
A 7-night standard studio runs approximately 95 points in regular season. Savanna-view studios cost approximately 15–20 additional points per week — an upgrade most guests say is worth every point. At current market rates of $19–21/point, a 7-night standard studio costs approximately $1,800–$2,000. A savanna-view studio runs approximately $2,100–$2,400 for the week.
Booking and Transportation
Animal Kingdom Lodge is one of the more accessible premium DVC resorts. Unlike the Polynesian, which sells out at the 11-month window for popular weeks, Animal Kingdom Lodge generally has availability at the 7-month window for most of the year — meaning you can rent from any DVC member with enough points, not just Animal Kingdom Lodge owners.
The one honest caveat: Animal Kingdom Lodge is bus-only. No monorail, no Skyliner, no boat service. Approximately 20 minutes by bus to Magic Kingdom and 15 minutes to Animal Kingdom. For guests focusing on Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, this is manageable. For guests splitting time between Epcot and Magic Kingdom heavily, the bus dependency is worth considering.
